What happened to Oscar and cookie monster and snuffleupagus?

My son has just started to get into sesame street, and none of the characters I remember are on anymore (except for elmo)! Once in a while count dracula will be on the spanish sesame street and once in a while I'll see Bert and Ernie or Big Bird, but what happened to cookie monster, oscar, and snuffleupagus?!?!?! And what's up with the dumb flying fairy school?! Laaaame! If this is the new sesame street, I need to find some old school ones on dvd!
